Horror Guy’s Review of The Hills Have Eyes 2

I’m a bit of a lagger these days when it comes to keeping up with current fear media. Case in point–I’m only now getting thru the first half of the first season of the CW’s Supernatural. I watch way too much TV and it gets difficult to keep up with all the current stuff I enjoy, so certain things have to wait until they hit DVD before I can find time to view. Supernatural is one of those programs. Anyway, I’m working my way thru the first season and really enjoying it so far; it’s entertaining, engaging and I enjoy the theme of using actual legends (urban and otherwise) as the basis for the macabre plot lines. There’s this episode on the second disc, titled Bugs, that centers on a community being plagued by a rash of mysterious deaths involving, as one may have guessed, bugs. There’s this one scene early on where a young woman is in the shower when suddenly, spiders begin swarming from around the showerhead and up the shower drain. Seeing this, the lady panics, screams and attempts to run from the shower…the camera pans down and you can see her feet slipping on the shower floor as she continues to scream. It appears that her wet feet find some purchase and she does flee, right thru the glass shower door; all you see is the broken glass falling into the shower along with a sudden splash of very realistic blood. This all happens in a matter of seconds, but the scene is one of the most sudden, jarring, frightening shots I’ve witnessed in recent horror cinema. It sent me running to the Laptop so that I could compose this very entry and say that this one scene was much scarier and far more entertaining than The Hills Have Eyes 2, which was a complete waste of 90 minutes of my Sunday afternoon.
