Horror Goes High-Def

Starz has announced that the “Masters of Horror” series will be released in Blu-Ray this year. If you haven’t caught this excellent horror series in High-Def already on Showtime, you’ll be amazed. Expect to see classic episodes like Joe Dante’s “Homecoming” and John Carpenter’s “Cigarette Burns” in high-def on your Sony Playstation 3 soon. Plus, Warner’s has announced direct-to-video horror titles in the HD-DVD format.

More Commentary on ‘Hostel Part II’ and Why Horror Is About to Hibernate Again

Here are more of my thoughts on why “Hostel Part II,” a very good fear film, bombed so badly at the box office. Simply put, the “novelty” of R-rated horror was worn off again. It’s worn off before, and it’s wearing off again. But more importantly, our society is changing. We’re going from right-wing to left-wing. That’s happened before too.

Darren Lynn Bousman on ‘Saw IV’

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you have to admit one thing about the SAW franchise: it has managed to avoid the pit that sucks so many horror sequels down into box office oblivion. The first SAW was a sleeper hit, considered a success because its tiny $1-million investment netted neaarly $50-million at U.S. theatres; both SAW II and SAW III expanded on that number, each earning over $80-million.

Revolver Entertainment Releases Broken and The Zombie Diaries

The UK-based Revolver Entertainment have two interesting releases coming soon in the form of a serial killer flick and a zombie flesh eating spree. Both BROKEN and THE ZOMBIE DIARIES are set for Region 2 DVD release in August.

Heather Matarazzo (Wiener Dog) Naked

I don’t know if it’s do to the summer or if I am just getting tired of horror news myself, but it seems like nothing interesting has happened since Hostel 2 opened. So far the only thing we have to look forward to this week is 1408 (Review Coming Soon) and from what I have heard, that is not much to look forward to. So here you go, for no reason Dawn Wiener’s (Heather Matarazzo from Welcome to the Dollhouse) boobs from Hostel 2! Must be 18 or older, or have a parents permission to click link.

The Horror Guy is a Winner!

Got home from the Soul-Crushing Day Job yesterday to find a plain delivery envelope in the daily stack of trash snail mail with what felt suspiciously like two DVDs inside. Inside was….two DVDs! Two new Lion’s Gate releases to be more specific: Ed Gein and Curse of the Zodiac. Apparently I was a winner in some new subscriber promo from Rue Morgue magazine. I just subscribed and they’re already droppin’ free flicks on me. Thanks Rue Morgue…the Horror Guy is most grateful. Now I just have to find time to actually watch these things and bang out my opinions.
And a special ’scream out’ to Miss Mary for sending me this image during a rough time at the Day Job. Don’t know where you found it, but it gave the Horror Guy quite a chuckle.

The Host Sequel News

Fans of THE HOST will be sorely disappointed to hear that original director Bong Joon-ho will not be returning to the director’s chair. In fact, he said that he wants nothing to do with it and will stand by that statement according to Horror-Movies.ca

Pan's Labyrinth

Innocence has a power evil cannot imagine.

When a young girl named Ofelia and her pregnant mother are taken into the care of her stepfather, a sadistic military man, the mother has hopes that their meager life will be fulfilled and their familys dreams will come true. But as dreams often seem to do, it will not come true. As Ofelia learns of the real world around her and of the incredible cruelty possessed by her step father, the young girl will quickly learn of the adult world that has completely engulfed her and her family. Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro Pans Labyrinth is a genre crossing masterpiece of incredible filmmaking, that takes the viewer into a breathtaking world of beauty and pain.

Big Bad Wolf (2007) - Molly Review

Homicidal (1961) - Critic Exchange by Thomas Ellison

If Psycho is the grandfather of the slasher film, then Homicidal should be considered the crazy great-uncle of the genre. When William Castle, master showman and Hitchcock rival, saw the box office returns on Psycho he wasinspired to make a similar film. Castle handed the scripting duties to frequent collaborator Robb (House on Haunted Hill) White. Then, Castle devised a great advertising campaign.

It’s not quite Amityville, it’s not quite scary: It’s House.

Hostel: Part II

In order to escape the everyday worries of the college party-girl life (not to mention all of those hectic Girls Gone Wild tapings), three young American women decide to get a little R&R by traveling to Europe for a bit of a vacation. While there, they meet some wonderfully creepy gents and one charismatic stranger, who invite the three of them to stay at a little hostel she knows of. Well you know what happens next.

Hostel 2 seems to follow the 80s slasher sequel formula of: if it aint broke, dont fix it. This sequel really doesnt depart from the original too much. If you liked the first Hostel, youll probably like Hostel 2. If you didnt like the original, then Id pretty much skip this one as well.

Godzilla 3-D in the Works

You should be stoked to hear that there is a new Godzilla film that will not only be in English, but be in 3-D (!!)

Scorpion King Sequel Coming

‘Grindhouse Universe’

GO SEE HOSTEL 2 THIS WEEKEND: A Letter From Eli Roth and WIL!

What I’m saying is, this is your last chance to see one of my films for a while. If you haven’t seen it, go now, because after next weekend the film will be gone from theaters. There are too many other summer movies coming in, so basically we get two weeks in cinemas, and then the film will live on DVD. I am not directing CELL any time soon, and I most likely will take the rest of the year to write my other projects.

Dread Central Thinks They?re Are MST3K! Oh No!

Lame horror websites like this one will review anything: scripts, magazines, books, movies, and your mother’s apple pie. As long as it makes us feel important and better than you, we will review it. So I decided to review Dread Central’s new podcast feature Splattrax, (why not) where each week, I guess, you can watch a bad movie at the same time as the DC gang and listen to them try to be Mystery Science Theater.

Jonathan Davis and Clive Barker Make Music in Oblivion

Korn frontman, Jonathan Davis, has announced an upcoming project on AOL entitled OBLIVION in association with Clive Barker. Not much has been divulged on OBLIVION, but Davis described it as a “dark opera” and different from anything we’ve ever seen before.

R.L. Stine Books Make it to the Big Screen

20th Century Fox is in development with children’s horror author R.L. Stine to turn some of his great stories into major motion pictures as reported by Horror-Movies. No word yet on whether the Goosebumps shorts will be expanded into features or devised as an anthology series. This is great news for those that missed the short-lived, but award winning Goosebumps TV show.
