The Silence of the Lambs

Behavioral Science, the FBI section that deals with serial murder, is on the bottom floor of the academy building at Quantico, half buried in the earth.
These are the opening words to the novel Silence of the Lambs by author Thomas Harris; these few words hooked me immediately and pulled me down into the world of Dr. Hannibal Lecter and didn’t let me go until I finished the book some seven hours later. To this day Silence of the Lambs remains the only book that I have ever read from front to back in one session.
Harris was able to, quite literally, draw me into the world of not only Dr. Lecter, but also of agent Clarice Starling and of the fiendish Jame Gumb and the intricate game of “quid pro quo” that goes on between them. The book is just so superbly crafted and paced that you just flow through the pages wanting more and waiting to see what happens next, which makes it so hard to put down for any length of time, I think because you’re afraid to miss what might happen if you don’t read the next page.
First look at UK Horror Comedy The Cottage
Clown
You can't have slaughter without laughter.
So I’m rummaging through this bag of screeners I jacked from the big H at Horrorfind. I figured I was bored so I could go for some ultra low budget horror. I grabbed this generic blank DVD with the word “Clown” written on it in black marker. I figured clowns can be scary right? Honestly I didn’t expect much, I was planning on playing video games as I watched.
Problem with my plan was that this little micro budget film sucked me right in during the opening scene holding my attention for the entire 70 minute run time. This flick was surprisingly good!
The film opens with this 300lb dude doing a hilarious Mark Walberg in “The Departed” impersonation as a bad cop. It was cheesy yet hilarious. That phrase sums up the first half of the film, cheesy and hilarious.
Brain Hammer’s PICKS FROM THE CRYPT Vol. 26: Don’t get caught ALIVE!
Gory greetings horroryearbook alumni! Ever since “28 Days Later” and the running zombies of the “Dawn Of The Dead” remake came on the scene there’s been a raging debate as to what is a zombie and what isn’t. I look at it like this: if it isn’t a walking corpse – it isn’t a zombie. Speaking of zombies, this week’s PICKS FROM THE CRYPT are a terrible trio of hardcore horror favorites from 1980 that are often mislabeled as zombie flicks despite the fact that there are no living dead in any of them. Prepare yourself for a walking, living nightmare and LET THE BLOODSHED BEGIN!!!
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) Movie Review
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem has a built in audience. I cannot say I am disappointed by the finished product. My cynical nature expects these kinds of results. Sure, the R-rated mayhem is better than the first film, much better, but nothing to write home about in the end.
Seven Horrors of Christmas
Just how bad is “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem”. Let’s just say it makes “Halloween Resurrection” look like a masterpiece.
Happy Holidays from the Horror Guy!

Dexter on CBS?
I caught this in my ET Weekly, in the ew.com poll section. CBS is thinking, and I said thinking of airing an edited version of Dexter if the writer strike continues. It worked with Sex and the City, and I think that may have been a little racier than Dexter. So what does this mean? If you cannot afford Showtime and cannot afford to rent or buy the DVDs, you are one broke ass bitch, who may be able to finally watch Dexter on regular TV. Start praying for that strike to last.
Horror Guy’s Review of I Am Legend
Not being the biggest Will Smith fan in the world, I really didn’t have high hopes for this flick. I had originally intended to wait for the DVD before even bothering to watch it but after reading some good press and finding out that Cridafer really wanted to see it, we headed over to the cineplex last night to check it out. Boy am I glad we did. Don’t get me wrong; this is no Oscar winner by any means and there are any number of horror flicks that run circles around this film, but after all the crap I’ve had to endure lately I Am Legend was a breath of fresh air. It’s got thrills, scares, tension, a solid storyline and just a dash of humor. Many who have reviewed this film have complained about the changes made from the original story, but to be completely honest, I’ve never read the story. Yeah, yeah, I know…’What kind of Horror Guy has never read I Am Legend?!!!?’ Well….this kind, I guess. Just never got around to it. Not having read the source material as a basis for comparison, I can say in my humblest of opinions this flick stands on its own as a solid piece of eerie entertainment; you will likely find it more enjoyable if you try to watch it as it’s own work of art rather than trying to compare it to the Richard Matheson tale.

Horror Guy’s Top 5 Horror Flicks of 2007
It’s here again….that special time where we look back and sit in judgment over what the past year has brought us; in this case my top 5 fright flicks of 2007. Counting down….
#5
Rob Zombie’s Halloween
I originally anticipated that this would be numero uno on my list this year, what with my being such a rabid Halloween and Rob Zombie fan and all, but Mr. Zombie disappointed me a little with his overly strong focus on the monster and not enough character development for those the monster was stalking. However, the ending alone was creepy enough and the rest of the film ‘jump scare’ and gory enough for this one to crack my top five.
#4
30 Days of Night
Being a huge fan of the original graphic novel series, I eagerly anticipated the film version of this story of modern vampires descending on a small Alaskan town during their 30 day stretch of darkness. The flick was definitely above the average of what I expect from a movie, but fell just short of living up to the original story. Still, it was far and above most everything else released this past year in the horror genre.
#3
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Pure horrific fun from beginning to end. If you haven’t seen this mockumentary focusing on the exploits of serial slasher wannabe Leslie Vernon, you are really missing a gem of a movie. If nothing else, Robert Englund as ‘the Ahab’ makes this flick well worth watching.
#2
The Host
I really can’t explain why I enjoyed this movie so much. Maybe it was the goofy marine monster, maybe it was the beautiful Hi-Def Blu-Ray imagery, maybe it’s just because there are not enough monster movies being produced for my taste but this flick is a joy to behold. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop wasting time and buy/rent it now!
#1
Grindhouse
Hands down the best viewing experience all year for this Horror Guy. I’m completely pissed off that the powers that be chose to split up the two flicks making up this theatrical double bill of awesome-ness when it was released on DVD a couple months back; made it difficult to recreate the experience at home. Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror paired with Tarantino’s Death Proof made for one kick-ass movie combo that pulled no punches. From the opening faux trailers to the closing credits of the second feature, I was riveted.
Either of my readers care to share their favorites of 2007?
Top Ten Horror Movies of 2007
Well here it is our first and maybe last top ten horror movies of the year list. I realized something about top ten lists; they are a lot of fun when someone else picks them. Since this was such a major pain in the ass, and our original motto at HYB (even though we are far removed from our original vision) was to leave no horror film behind, this is actually part two of three of our “Year in Review.” Part one was our in-depth look at the film careers of Eli Roth and Rob Zombie. (Read LEADERS OF THE SPLAT: An examination of the films and careers of Rob Zombie and Eli Roth Here).
