My Little Pony meets Freddy vs Jason vs Ash

Back in 2007, WildStorm and Dynamite got together to create Freddy vs Jason vs Ash, a comic crossover concept only slightly less ridiculous than Superman & Batman vs Alien & Predator, but one that ended up with far better results. Crazy, I know.

Now its time to bring these horror icons back together for a three-way vs deathmatch, custom My Little Pony style!

In this corner, the fan-favorite flash-fried five-finger-flaying Freddy Krueger! He’s lookin’ pretty dreamy with his trademark Freddy fedora, ratty green and red striped sweater, and of course his deadly blade glove thingy. You can tell the sculptor spent a long time getting that rotten melty scar tissue look just right. And look at those eyes! He is pure fucking evil! This My Little Pony is actually honestly pretty goddamn scary. He scares me, anyways.

And in this corner, the maddest meanest machete maniac mama’s boy, Jason Voorhees! Slow walkin’ and never talkin’, the man gets around without making a sound. (Unless you count that creepy “chi chi chi ha ha ha” noise.) The trademark mask looks crazy killer, I love the look of the eye holes and the straps are some very nice detail. His trusty rusty machete looks a little underwhelming, though, but it might just be the angle its pictured at. The tail is very interesting… it appears to be made out of a chewed up shoelace. I have no idea why, but it works way better than if the creator had just left the original tail made of hair. That’s the cool thing about art – it can make sense even when you don’t understand it.

And in this corner, the man with the plan and a chainsaw for a hand, Ash Williams! First off, that hairdo cracks my shit up. And the eyes make him look totally stoned. The chainsaw rules, the sculptor totally nailed it. And check out that boomstick! And the Necronomicon! These accessories totally blow away Freddy’s glove and Jason’s machete.

Ding ding ding! Round 1! Jason starts slowly meandering towards the center of the ring, but Freddy isn’t waiting for him to get there. These two have a long standing beef that they’re dying to settle. Freddy’s on Jason’s back like a rabid flying monkey, slicing and dicing like a wise-cracking Cuisinart. Jason makes a couple clumsy attempts to grab him with his free hoof until he remembers he has a machete in the other hoof. He reaches back with it to scratch that annoying little itch.

It looks like Ash is hanging back, letting these two go at each other a bit. The two monsters don’t even seem to notice him, they’re just slashing each other and spraying rancid vein juice all over the mat. The hatred between these two is legendary, there is no love lost here! Uh oh, looks like Ash is a little bored – OH, and BOOM goes the boomstick, right in Freddy’s ugly mug! Jason is turning toward Ash and… OH! Too slow! Ash has got the chainsaw deep in his guts, laughing like a maniac as chunks and gunk splatter his face. Freddy’s getting back up, just in time to get his glove hoof chainsawed off! OH, THE CARNAGE! Looks like these two big baddies are off to the glue factory.

AND THE WINNER of this three-way custom My Little Pony vs deathmatch by TKO is…

My Little Pony meets Cthulhu

Its been a little while since I did one of these My Little Pony meets Horror posts, and I’m reading H.P. Lovecraft’s “Shadow Over Innsmouth” right now, so I figured hey, why not do My Little Pony meets Cthulhu?

First up is “Cutethulhu” (above) by the artist Cehualli. This is a top notch customization job and the result is actually a little frightening. The paint job on the flesh is very creepy and very organic-looking compared to the specimens that follow. The wings are huge, the detail on the tentacle suckers is great, but most importantly the face looks awesome. Most the other ones below just look like My Little Ponys with some tentacles tacked on the faces like some kind of weird reverse game of Pin The Tail On The Donkey. But Cutethulhu here has a totally unique look, and he’s my number one favorite My Little Cthulhu Pony.

Next up is a custom My Little Pony done by artist Spippo. This one is a close second thanks to the amazing tentacle work. Pound for pound, this Cthulhu has more tentacles than any of the other ones! I’m not a huge fan of the wings, though, and the paint job is a little flat. Still, this is a My Little Cthulhu Pony to be reckoned with.

Next we have “Tutu”. I think the key elements here are the unique eyes and the excellent job on the wings. The tentacles leave a bit to be desired, and the paint job is a little monotonous, but overall I really like this one.

This is the only My Little Cthulhu Pony to have actual hair for the mane. The eyes are extremely well done, and look exactly like those of a real octopus! Sadly, the wings are very lacking compared to the other MLP’s, but this is still a very respectable work.

Last up is a very interesting version of My Little Pony meets Cthulhu. I think this one was done in more of a “designer toy” style, and isn’t meant to look very realistic. The tentacles look astounding, but I think the most unique aspect of this one is the bulbous head. I am just not a fan of the flat minty green color, and the tail looks a little weird for some reason. I think replacing the hair with tentacles for the tail would have been better. But then I guess you couldn’t comb it. Pft. ;P

My Little Pony meets Edward Scissorhands

I’m opening strong with the best of the Edward Scissorhands custom My Little Ponys first. “The eyes have it.” The complete lack of eyebrows and eyelashes are what give the one pictured above the uncanny resemblance to Johnny Depp’s mopey character in the movie. And check out those scars, they are puffy and raised, just like real scars! The outfit looks great, the trademark mess of black leather straps and buckles are so convincing they might actually be made out of real material rather than just sculpted. The final touch: the hand blades. Is that real rust on real metal blades I see? Talk about attention to detail.

I’m giving this guy second place. The presence of eyelashes makes this one look more cutesy and less faithful to the true spirit of Edward. The scars do look great though. The leather duds are definitely nicely detailed, gotta love that collar. The hand blades look really good, although they might be a little small and thin, proportionally speaking. And I have to wonder if it wouldn’t look better to have them protruding from the front of his hoofs rather than the bottom like that. Its kinda weird to have him propped up on his hand blades. But there’s little use nitpicking, overall this is an incredible custom My Little Pony, and it really gave my favorite above a run for his money.

In third place, we have another Edward with eyelashes, and comparing them to the first place winner, you can definitely see what a detriment they make. My biggest gripe with this one is that you can’t see any scars on the face! Perhaps they are there but just didn’t get picked up in the photo, I can’t tell. The leather outfit is a little lacking when compared to the other two, and those hand blades look sculpted rather than made of real metal.

And in last place we have this little freaky thing. I don’t know what’s going on with the eyes, to be frank. They look jaundiced and beat up. Those facial scars look painted on. The leather outfit is totally phoned in, most of the body looks like gloss black paint rather than leather! Not much to say for those hand blades, either. They almost look like cardboard. On his own, he’s still kinda cool, but he just can’t compete when compared with these other fine specimens of Edward Scissorhands My Little Ponys.

Horror Etc Podcast

I’ve been listening to a lot of horror podcasts lately. I have a really boring work-from-home day job and the only way I can survive the brain-melting tedium is to throw on a podcast while I work. Maybe I’m too picky, (I’ve been accused of that before), but what I’ve found is that a lot of horror podcasts suck. And they suck it hard.

But there is one horror podcast that towers above the rest like Godzilla over Tokyo. Straight out of Canada and hosted by Tony and Ted (and sometimes Doug), the Horror Etc Podcast (or “Horror Etcetera Podcast”) is easily the best horror podcast I’ve come across. In comparing all of the many podcasts I listen to, I’ve identified several areas in which Horror Etc succeeds while many podcasts fail, and I wanted to share them here.

Presence

In the same way that not everybody was born to be a radio disc jockey, not everybody was born to be a podcast jockey. To be really good, you have to have character. You have to have personality. You have to avoid sounding like somebody talking into a microphone and instead sound like somebody having a conversation with the listener.

Tony and Ted have what it takes: they have the voices, they have the charisma, and they have the presence. Tony has a flair for theatrics and sounds like a sophisticated Professor of Horror. Ted tells it like it is and sounds like the world’s premiere horror news reporter. The way these two friends’ personalities play off of each other is pure genius. Whenever Doug is on board he brings an intense level of horror dedication to the table, and he fits into the flow so well you forget that he was ever missing.

Preparation

I don’t think any other podcast jockeys prepare for each show as hard as Ted and Tony do. If you have ever listened to very many horror podcasts, you have undoubtedly heard many of them go like this…
“What did you watch this week?”
“I watched _______. Have you seen it?”
“No. Was it good?”
“It was alright. What did you watch this week?”
“I watched _______. Have you seen it?”
“No. Was it good?”
“It was alright. What did you watch this week?”
…and repeat ad nauseum. For the entire episode. And if they somehow happen to discuss a movie for more than a few seconds, their insights are not particularly thoughtful or deep. They’re usually about A) how much blood was in the movie, or B) how many boobs were in the movie.

While Tony and Ted (and sometimes Doug) love blood and boobs as much as the next horror fan, their love for horror goes much deeper. They possess so much knowledge about all things horror they could easily just ramble off the top of their heads for entire episodes, they still take the time to do research and prepare for their podcast in the same way that dedicated teachers prepare lesson plans for their classes. To avoid rambling gabfests as described above, Horror Etc focuses each episode on a very specific topic and digs deep. Take, for example, episode 161: Jack the Ripper. Tony and Ted are both well-read experts on the Ripper, and I learned more about the Ripper case from this episode than I have from all of the Jack the Ripper specials I’ve ever seen on History Channel.

The level of depth they go to is often amazing. For example, they took 3 entire episodes to cover the director Sam Raimi. They also took 3 episodes to cover John Carpenter, 3 to cover the Nightmare on Elm Street series, and 3 to cover the Halloween series (plus a 4th to do an audio commentary for the first Halloween movie). And they recorded an astounding 4 episodes covering the Friday the 13th series. But they cover a lot more than just movies. They have also done 2 entire episodes on horror comics and 2 entire episodes on horror books, as well as episodes attending and covering horror conventions. They have also done several insightful movie commentary tracks for listeners to play right along with the movies. (I particularly enjoyed the commentary track they did for John Carpenter’s The Thing). The depth and breadth of information you get from Horror Etc simply blows everything else out of the water.

Number of Hosts

A few horror podcasts have a single host… and that can get really boring to listen to, especially if the host doesn’t have good audio presence and/or doesn’t prepare for the show. Thankfully there aren’t many podcasts like this around, and the few there are most likely won’t be around much longer.

On the other end of the scale, a lot of horror podcasts have too many hosts. This causes them to devolve into lowest common denominator chaos, complete with awkward interruptions and constant confusion. Getting together with all their buddies and talking over each other like rowdy drunks might equal a raging party for the hosts, but for the listeners its just a befuddling clusterfuck.

Horror Etc never gets messy. Even when all three of the Horror Etc hosts are present for an episode, they don’t interrupt or talk over each other. They have too much respect for each other to do that. It also helps tremendously that they always get together in the same location so they are able to read each others unspoken communication queues while they record. This makes for crisp clean quality recordings of smooth and natural conversations. Compare this to the podcasts where multiple hosts phone in from different locations so they sound like robots talking inside tin cans and suffering from satellite delay which makes them constantly interrupt each other.

Filler

Some horror podcasts will fill up time by playing entire movie clips, apparently forgetting that their podcast listeners can’t actually see the video. Some fill up time by playing horror-themed music in between segments, whether you want to hear it or not. Pretending you’re a radio station with your horror podcast is fine if you’re playing songs you know your listeners will like, but when you play Sheb Wooley’s “Flying Purple People Eater” followed by some death metal band whose name no one knows how to pronounce, chances are its not going to appeal to everyone. Hardly anyone, really.

Horror Etc is all killer and no filler. If they’re going to play a video, first they tell you where you can find it so that you can watch it along with them. And if they are going to play a song, its usually either the Horror Etc opening theme music, or the theme music from the film(s) the episode is focusing on.

Regularity

Independent podcasts often have very irregular schedules. You might get one podcast every couple of weeks, or one a month, or worse. I’m subscribed to podcasts that haven’t updated for several months. I don’t hold this against them, I know they’re indie and they’re not getting paid to do it, they’re just putting out episodes whenever they can.

Horror Etc is indie but they put out a new episode every week, and they haven’t missed a week since they started years ago. Sometimes it has meant that they couldn’t record together and one of them has had to call in to the show, and sometimes it has meant that someone was not able to make it to a show at all. But the show always goes on.

Nobody is paying me or bribing me to write this. I just like to blog about what I like. And I like Horror Etc. Whenever my iTunes subscription to Horror Etc downloads a new episode, its the first thing I listen to. If you have any interest in horror podcasts at all, I really can’t recommend Horror Etc enough. My Little Pony meets Nightmare Before Christmas

This custom My Little Pony of Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the best custom My Little Ponys I’ve seen yet. I love how the artist sculpted the skull and teeth to actually look like a horse’s skull and teeth. All the rest of the custom Jack Skellington My Little Ponys I’ve seen only have cartoony teeth drawn on. They aren’t nearly as clever or as detailed as this.

Here’s a less close-up view of the Jack Skellington My Little Pony. You can see his neck bones extending down from the back of his skull, and the rest of his neck is painted black to try to make it look like negative space, like its not there. This is a pretty good solution to the problem of making a fat horse neck look like nothing but neck bones. To remove the entire neck and replace it with only the neck bones would be a major overhaul and still might not look quite right once it was finished. The attention to detail doesn’t stop with the skull and neck bones, the suit looks great too. Although maybe the pinstripes could use another coat of white. But that’s just nitpicking, this MLP is undoubtedly awesome.

Next we have Jack’s girlfriend Sally. Compared to Jack she was probably much easier to do. The only custom sculpting required was for her dress. The rest of the work was in the paint, and she looks amazing. Still, something about her seems to be missing, something not quite right, but I couldn’t place it until I saw the next picture…

This set was sculpted and painted by Tat2ood Monster. It captures the aspect of Sally that is missing in the previous picture… her eyes. In the movie, her pupils are very small black dots in the middle of her huge almond shaped eyes. This version of Sally captures that aspect, whereas the previous version simply left the original My Little Pony eyes. Tat2ood Monster also did a great job on her hair, the outfit, everything. This Sally is killer, and I actually like her more than the Sally above. This Jack is a great match for this Sally, really nothing wrong with him. However, both are done with the newest My Little Pony generation design, the “super cutesy” style. This smaller version prevents the kind of custom horse skull sculpting that made the top Jack so awesome, but you gotta admit this cute couple looks totally sweet together.

Finally we have the third Jack Skellington My Little Pony, and its probably my least favorite of the lot. Though the mane is white, which is better than any other color it could be, Jack doesn’t have any hair, and the lack of hair is one of the things that makes the first 2 Jack designs so striking. The paint job is very simple, yet the pinstripes on the suit could be done better. A little thicker and far fewer would be more visually striking. Other than that, this is a very solid are respectable custom job, I just don’t like it as much as the others. I’m not knocking it, its still probably better than I could ever do!

Nurse and Pyramid Head

Silent Hill is one of my favorite horror properties of all space and time. For those who are unfamiliar, Silent Hill is a series of video games that focuses on psychological horror and difficult gameplay, and the series has been so successful that it spawned a feature length film, soon to be followed by a sequel.

Feral and Nurse

I haven’t played all of the Silent Hill video games, in fact I’ve only completed one of them, (Silent Hill 2), and I own a couple others that I haven’t finished yet. The truth is that, although I do like video games, sadly I’m not very good at them, and the Silent Hill games are really frickin’ hard! They belong to a gaming genre called “survival horror”, a genre in which you don’t get very good weapons, ammo and health are few and far between, and you are usually forced to run rather than stand and fight. Both running and fighting are extremely difficult because your controls are intentionally slow and clumsy, making you easy prey. Fail to conserve your ammo, or use up your health too fast, and you will quickly find yourself stuck in the game, unable to progress any further. Which is what usually happens to me whenever I play the Silent Hill games. I know that these disadvantages and frailties are some of the things that make the games truly frightening, but at the same time I kinda wish it was easier to get through them so I could see more of the games. Then again, if the games were easy to beat I wouldn’t be so scared of them and I probably wouldn’t like them as much. Either way, the games are fiercely original, like nothing else out there.

Feral

The Silent Hill movie is definitely in my top 10 favorite horror movies of all time. Its incredibly creepy and surreal from start to finish, and its great to see so many creatures from the games haunting the big screen. The Nurses, the Lying Figures, and Pyramid Head are all there, plus some new monsters cooked up specifically for the movie. It pulls no punches, and its easily one of the most violent and disturbing movies of the last couple decades.

Nurse

My favorite thing about the Silent Hill universe is the creature designs, which are unique, psychologically disturbing, and totally bad-ass. Many of the monsters are designed with twisted sexual symbolism, like Abstract Daddy, who looks like two figures copulating on a bed, Siam, who looks like a woman strapped to a man, back to back in kinky bondage, or Asphyxia, a perverse human centipede who was around many years before the Human Centipede movie. The strange and frightening creatures are physical manifestations of trauma the characters have suffered, pulled directly from their subconscious. This gives the monsters an extra depth of terror.

Split Head

The fact that the Silent Hill monsters are so seriously disturbing with such strong adult overtones makes them excellent candidates for the custom My Little Pony treatment. My favorite out of all the Silent Hill My Little Ponys: Pyramid Head, of course. He’s my favorite monster in the games and the movies, and his custom My Little Pony is super detailed and scary. Check out the sculpt adn paint on those stitches that hold together his creepy butcher’s apron made out of skin. A close runner-up is the Split Head, that sawed-in-half head might be the most extreme mod I’ve seen out of all the custom My Little Ponies, and that paint job is incredible.

I am totally in love with this trailer. Even though I get annoyed with game trailers that don’t show actual gameplay, in this case I just can’t hold it against it. This looks so great it may not even be actual cutscenes from the game. It might just be a short film they whipped up to promote it. Who knows? Who cares? You can’t argue with the results.

The official site is loading really slow right now and seems to still be under construction, but it might be worth keeping an eye on.

My Little Pony meets Alien vs Predator (AVP)

I’m a huge fan of the Aliens movies, I collect all kinds of Aliens crap like books, comics, statues, and toys. I would LOVE to get my hands on this custom My Little Pony Alien for my collection. Whoever sculpted this did an incredible job, this could be the coolest custom My Little Pony perversion ever.

If you’re an Aliens fan then it’s almost impossible to keep Predators out of your life thanks to the Aliens vs Predators (AVP) video games and movies. Both AVP movies were pretty disappointing, but I blame that on the Predators. Why? Because Predators suck.

Yeah, you heard. I am not a fan of Predators. What can I say, if I wanted to watch a monster parade around in fishnets with a ridiculous hair-do, I would watch Cher’s If I Could Turn Back Time music video.

What, you want to fight about it? Sure, the first Predator movie was fairly good, I’ll give you that. But that was because of Arnold, not because of the Predator. And Predator 2 is bloody awful, you have to admit. It’s so bad that it’s in the top 10 worst movies I’ve ever seen (and not “bad” in the “good” way). The third Predator movie (“Predators”) was at least better than Predator 2, but it was still pretty meh.

I think most people agree with me that Aliens are better than Predators. The proof is that Aliens has more movies and more merchandise and more websites and pretty much more of everything than Predators do. The people have spoken. PLUS, if these two custom My Little Ponys got into a fight, the Predator would get his pansy ass wupped in about 2.2 seconds.

A little something about me you might not have known: I’m a toy collector. Its part of my promise to myself to never grow up. Well, maybe I’m a little grown up considering that I collect a lot of toys that most parents would NEVER allow their kids to have. Toys like Yasushi Nirasawa’s Resurrection of Monstress line, far too sexy for most kids. Or toys like my imported hentai gashapon sets, featuring naked girls that are obviously intended for adults only.

I love toys and always will. I’ve recently become infatuated with custom My Little Pony toys that have been modded to spoof horror movie characters. The “cute meets ugly” factor and the DIY aspect make these super killer and incredibly collectible… each one is a unique piece of art.

This is the first post of several that will focus on these custom My Little Pony horror toys. Here, My Little Pony meets Hellraiser to give us My Little Pinhead and My Little Chatterer. The Pinhead and Chatterer at the top were created using a newer line of My Little Pony figures; you can tell they are newer because they look more like birth defected babies than ponies. The outfits look to be made of Sculpey or some other modeling material that has been painted gloss black with some silver for any metal buckles or accoutrements.

The two bottom pictures of Pinhead show a toy sculpture that incorporated an older generation of My Little Ponies; you can tell because it actually dares to resemble a creature of the equine (horsey) persuasion. Check out the clothes! They are actually custom-fitted and hand-sewn from what looks to be some kind of pleather or pvc material rather than just being sculpted out of modeling clay. That is pretty fuckin’ bad ass.

I surprised myself by actually preferring the My Little Cenobites pictured at the top… something about the excessive cuteness of the newer ponies just begs to be tortured and defiled by black leather, blades and blood.

The Bloody Barber and the Haircut of Horror

Got me a haircut yesterday, it was scary. Went to a barber shop called The Vanishing American. I could tell the old barber’s hands were shaky and he was doing what felt like a really sloppy job. Then asked me if I was a bleeder as he lathered me up. He whipped out the razor and slashed away until he fuckin’ cut my ear! Turns out I am a bleeder. He also cut my hair way shorter than I asked for. Probably shortest I’ve ever had it. He shaved my sideburns shorter than I asked, and one ‘burn was longer than the other. Definitely one of the worst (if not THE worst) haircuts I’ve ever gotten. The man is crazy with a razor, worse than Sweeney Todd. I think I know where the vanishing Americans are going!
