B.P.R.D.: The Ectoplasmic Man (one-shot)
“This one-shot comic tells the origin of Johann Kraus – corresponding with Johann’s appearance in the 2008 feature film Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The Ectoplasmic Man is the ideal introduction to one of the most peculiar members of the remarkable Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.”
I’m a huge Johann Kraus fan, so I’ve been anxiously waiting for this comic for quite a while, and when it finally arrived, I’m happy to say that it did not disappoint. Not in the least!
John Arcudi continues to prove that he can knock the ball out of the park when it comes to writing what is perhaps the best currently running horror comic series in print. B.P.R.D. has recently been focusing on slowly unraveling the mysterious pasts of several of its members; Abe Sapien’s origin was revealed in Garden of Souls, and the explanation of Captain Daimio’s return from the dead was unveiled in the thrilling and gruesome Killing Ground. These character origin stories both spanned five issues, so it feels a little unfair that Johann’s gets covered in only one issue. But there’s no denying that the issue is incredible, introducing Johann’s dastardly archenemy who inspires him to overcome the tragedy of his own recent death, join the B.P.R.D. and become a true hero. Albeit a very unusual one.
While the Hellboy II: The Golden Army movie introduces Johann Kraus on the big screen, he’s a fairly different and slightly less likable character than the Johann Kraus that readers have known all along and have waited so patiently to learn the origin story of. Check out the first few pages here and be sure not to miss B.P.R.D.: The Ectoplasmic Man (one-shot)!
