The Evil Dead #1
I’m gonna have to say that both the first and second Evil Dead movies were better than Army of Darkness (AKA Evil Dead 3). And I also gotta say that Dark Horse’s new Evil Dead comic just might be better than the Army of Darkness comics as well! Only time will tell, since the entire series isn’t out yet… but its off to a gruesomely groovy start.
Officially called an “expansion”, The Evil Dead #1 is the first installment of a 4-issue series that is actually an alternate take on the events of The Evil Dead movies. The events are basically the same, but the details we focus on within the horrifically blood soaked story are slightly different than those seen in the movies. It’s a very interesting idea that could fail miserably in the hands of lesser talent, but as you can see in this special free preview, with Mark Verheiden’s gritty realistic writing and John Bolton’s gorgeously gory artwork, it all works really well. (And with a name like John Bolton, you know it’s gotta be scary!)
Intense and dark, The Evil Dead is a far cry from the slapstick goofiness found in the Army of Darkness comics, which sometimes honestly took it a little too far. The Evil Dead is actually frightening. Now, I’m sure that some hardcore purists are not going to like the alternate storytelling, no matter what, even though the series is officially authorized. That can’t be helped. But the horrific hordes of your average Ash-kicking Evil Dead fans will eat it up like droves of starving and drooling Deadites. Either way, if you consider yourself an Evil Dead fan to any degree at all, or are even just Evil Dead curious, then you owe it to yourself to check out this comic. The Evil Dead #2 just came out as well, so be sure to grab that one too because you’re not going to want it to stop!
