Black Sunday

Black Sunday

I loved this movie. The darkly dramatic Barbara Steele (who I have a page about here) gave one of her best performances as a sexy satanic sorceress with an axe to grind. Masterfully directed in brooding black and white by the giallo maestro Mario Bava, Black Sunday (AKA La Maschera del Demonio) tells the story of a vampiric witch Asa Vadja who is tortured and burned at the stake by her own brother. Returning from the grave 200 years later, she exacts revenge on her brothers’ descendants. It was Bava’s directorial debut, and was very controversial at the time because of scenes of intense horror and torture, including a grisly bit featuring an iron maiden mask (sporting spikes on the inside of it) being forced onto Asa’s screaming face. I highly recommend it, check out the trailer for a terrifying taste of what to expect:
